Let’s be real: not every senior (or parent) comes to me with a clear vision for their session. And that’s completely okay. In fact, it’s more common than you’d think.
I remember early in my photography journey, I’d get anxious during discovery calls that felt quiet or uncertain. I’d think, “How am I supposed to create magic when they have no idea what they want?” But over time, I’ve learned that “I don’t know” is just the first step toward something truly personal and authentic.
Not long ago, I had a discovery call with a senior who had zero ideas for his session. No Pinterest boards, no outfit plans—just a shrug and a “I don’t know.”
So, I started asking questions. Not the typical “What do you want your photos to look like?” but more like, “What do you love to do when no one’s watching?” That’s when he mentioned fishing.
Fast forward to his session: we’re on the riverbank, the sun casting golden reflections on the water, and he’s in his element. Rod in hand, relaxed, and completely himself. The transformation was incredible—from unsure to totally in his zone.
There’s this pressure for seniors to have it all figured out before their session. But honestly? That’s not necessary. My philosophy is that sessions should be discovered, not forced.
By asking the right questions and creating a space where they feel comfortable, we uncover who they truly are. It’s not about replicating someone else’s photos; it’s about capturing them.
Here’s how I guide sessions, even when seniors are unsure:
The goal? For them to feel seen, heard, and celebrated—not rushed or boxed in.
Parents, if your senior doesn’t have it all figured out, that’s perfectly fine. Together, we’ll uncover what makes them unique and create a session that reflects their true self.
Ready to start this journey? Let’s connect and plan a session that’s authentically them.
