My Favorite Locations for Senior Sessions

As a senior photographer located in Southwestern Wisconsin, I have no shortage of serene, beautiful locations to use as a backdrop for senior portraits, and today, I’m sharing a few of my favorite settings in hopes of inspiring you to reimagine your senior photography experience!

My Favorite Locations:

My favorite thing about uncovering a new favorite location to photograph? That sense of discovery that’s involved with scouting a new location encourages me to get creative. I often find that some of my best work takes place in a new-to-me location!

Let’s get started.

  1. Rural Settings: tall, grassy fields; creeks or ponds; and back-country roads: From local state parks to nature preserves that feature both tall grass and mowed trails, these locations are the best of what life in the plains has to offer. A few local favorites: Apple Canyon River State Park, Swiss Valley Nature Preserve, and Mines of Spains.
  2. Flower Fields: Arboretums; flower preserves or gardens; and sunflower fields: Public flower fields can be hard to find, but they sure are a gem worth scouting. Here in Southwest Wisconsin, we have a local high school who grew a nature preserve as a science project, and it’s a wonderful setting for senior portraits every summer.
  3. City Setting: Downtown city streets; back alleys; parking garages or ramps; historic building storefronts; and wrought-iron staircases: The main streets where your senior grew up can be a fun portrait location. The options are only limited by your imagination, but a cityscape brings a customizable touch to a senior session, particularly if you photograph near or in front of buildings they’re personally connected to. A local favorite: Millwork District in Dubuque, IA.

I hope these location ideas help you to think of new locations to scout wherever you live! If you have any questions or favorite locations of your own to share, I’m just an email away. Check out my senior portfolio and see more images from past senior sessions
