Posing seniors can feel like a challengeâespecially when they show up feeling awkward, unsure of what to do with their hands, or comparing themselves to their friendâs perfectly curated Instagram photos. As photographers, itâs our job to guide them into natural, confident poses that bring out their true personality. In this blog, weâre breaking down the secrets to posing like a pro and creating images that feel effortless, authentic, and totally frame-worthy.
The first few minutes of a session can make or break a seniorâs confidence. Start with small talk, let them know what to expect, and remind them that feeling a little awkward is completely normal. Assure them that youâll guide them every step of the way and that the best photos often come from the most unexpected moments.
When in doubt, cycle through these five foundational poses at each location to create variety without overwhelming your client:
â
Stand: Crossed legs, hands in pockets, or a classic power stance.
â
Sit: Hugging their knees, using stairs for depth, or sitting with one knee up.
â
Lean: Against a wall, railing, or even a tree for a relaxed vibe.
â
Lay: Belly-down for a playful shot or back-down for dreamy, relaxed portraits.
â
Move: Walking, twirling, flipping their hairâmovement adds life to a session!
Speaking of movement, getting seniors out of their heads is the key to capturing natural expressions. Use prompts like:
đ âWalk toward me like youâre about to spill the biggest secret ever.â
đ âShake out your hair like youâre in a shampoo commercial.â
đ âIf you have a prop, letâs toss it or spin itâletâs have fun with it!â
The dreaded âWhat do I do with my hands?â question pops up every session. Give them direction:
đ Put hands in pockets.
đ Lightly touch a ring, necklace, or sleeve.
𤡠Run fingers through hair or adjust an outfit.
Your energy matters! The more you hype them up, the more confident theyâll feel. Show them sneak peeks on your camera, give constant positive feedback, and make sure they leave feeling like a rockstar.
