Picture Perfect: Tips for Building a Moodboard for Your Senior Portrait Session

It’s never too early to start planning for your senior session! You can start by creating a moodboard on your phone or a board on Pinterest, that you can share with your photographer.

Some of the first questions your photographer will ask you when you get ready to book your session is:

  • “what do you envision for your session?”
  • “What time of year do you want to book your session?”
  • “What types of outfits do you want to wear?”

The typical answer is “I haven’t thought about it yet”! I’m here to say that it’s never too early to start thinking about all the things you will want to know for your upcoming senior session and a moodboard would be a great thing to show your photographer so they can help make that a reality.

What do you envision for your session

Things to think about, do you want to incorporate your favorite sport, your favorite instrument, your passion for reading, your truck/car, your 4-legged fur baby or maybe it’s your favorite place like your family farm. Whatever it is your photographer needs to know about. So start finding images to save to your moodboard that incorporates the things you love. If it’s frolicking through flower fields then let that be known – because that will determine “WHEN” your session will take place.

What time of year do you want to book your session

Since you mentioned wild flower fields, you will not see wild flower fields in June or October, for sure late July- August. You’re in fall sports, they typically start the first or 2nd week of August so let’s make sure you book your session before the fall sports schedules start! Start looking at the photos you have saved to your moodboard, what time of year are they captured? Fall, early summer or late summer. This will help you determine when to book your session.

What types of outfits do you want to wear

Start saving images of outfits you like or would see yourself in, this will help when you’re out shopping for outfits. For most seniors this is the biggest struggle is knowing what to wear. The best advice is to keep it simple, don’t overthink it, and look at your closet. What would you wear out with your friends on a typical night out? Find something you feel comfortable in.
